It comes from my Chinese nickname “栗子” (Lizi), which actually comes from the initials of my name: Lisa Zhang.
Where does the name Leezi came from?
When did you start making music & why?
I wrote my first song when I was 14, around the time I started learning keyboard. I still remember playing a wrong note in class, and my teacher said, “Every wrong note belongs to you.” That moment changed everything. Since then, songwriting has become my biggest love.
What do you major in?
I’m studying at NYU Tisch’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, a program that covers everything from production and songwriting to performance, music business, and music reporting.
Your creative process?
I have about 3,000 notes on my phone... random ideas, lyrics, or thoughts that come to me anytime. Some of them grow into my music. I usually start with a theme or emotion I want to express, then build the melody, lyrics, and production together until it feels right
